If you really want to get away from it all, you can't do any better than staying in Northumberland. As well as being one of England's largest counties, it is also the least densely populated. This goes a long way to explaining its growing reputation as an escapist's paradise. The landscapes are vast. Behold a complex tapestry of misty peaks, ancient monuments, steep roads, deep valleys and windswept hills carpeted with heather. The lack of light pollution up here allows for some exquisite star gazing out of the towns.

Underlying all it's beauty is a vicious military history. As a result, the region bears the distinction of containing more castles and fortified houses than any other in the country. No greater testament to this past exists than Hadrian's Wall. Although depleted, huge stretches of the 2nd century wall still stand today, punctuated by the ruins of forts and their accompanying visitor centres.
Many towns bear similar reminders. Ramparts still remain at Berwick-upon-Tweed, which itself changed hands no less than 14 times in the space of just 300 years. Alnwick's past has also worked to its advantage. Its stunning castle (known as The Windsor of the North), has earned it a reputation as the most picturesque market town in all of Northumberland.
Many islands exist off the north east coast, but the most famous is the mystical settlement of Lindisfarne, aka Holy Island. This idyllic island can be reached only twice a day via a neck of narrow land. It's a tiny island completely dominated by a fairytale castle, which is a magnificent sight from any distance.
If you're looking for a more active day out, then the county is also home to the largest man-made lake in Europe, Kielder Water. Living in harmony with an enormous surrounding forest, it's perfect for a variety of watersports, including sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, water-skiing and fishing.
