The list goes on, but we need some space to tell you about the history! Buildings here date right back to the Roman days and pop up on the streets of virtually all of the towns and cities. Magnificent medieval structures, such as Samlesbury Hall in Preston, with its white and black patterned walls, are remarkably well preserved and open to the public. Other venues hark back to a more recent past, like the National Football Museum, which features a priceless collection of memorabilia from across the globe.

Fans of the Lord of the Rings series might want to follow the Tolkien Trail. Stretching along the Ribble Valley, it features much of the spectacular scenery that inspired the great author's works. Keen buffs might notice his adaptation of various local place names for inclusion in his famous books!
