Overview

Located in the Newington area of the city we are 1.2 miles / 2 km from the National Museum of Scotland, to the South-West of imposing Arthur's Seat and 1.4 mile / 2.25 kilometres South-South-West of Prince street. It should take you under 1/2 an hour to walk to the latter of these. However there is also a really good bus service from just up the road that will get you into the centre in under 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

As a guest you will be treated to a friendly personal service so that this stay in Edinburgh will be a memorable one. We are in fact quite well renown for how friendly and amiable staff are here. If there is anything we can do for you it will be done with a smile and with pleasure. We want you to remember us and come back again so we aim to please all the time.

You will find us in the south side of the City very close to the Royal Commonwealth swimming pool, Hollyrood Palace and the Castle. On offer are en suite rooms, internet access and there is a large but secure private car park. Only a 1 mile walk and you are in the centre of Edinburgh and there is an excellent bus service. This particular area is well served with bars, restaurants and cafes. Most reasonable hours of the day it is not hard to find something to eat locally or a refreshing beverage!

Overall: Overall, positive.

Bad Stuff: No Shower gel or shampoo. Small bars of soap but I cant wash my hair with a bar of soap can I?

Good Stuff: Clean. Quiet.

Overall: I should have liked to know if the hotel served meals other than breakfast. Or given recommendation of restaurants nearby.

Good Stuff: Roomy bedroom and bathroom

Overall: For a first time break in Edinburgh, it was excellent. the hotel staff were informative and friendly. They enabled the stay to be busy and fun.

Good Stuff: The staff were friendly and very helpful

Peter‘s Rating: 4.4/5

Overall: Our large ground floor room had a nice feeling of privacy and a very strong sense of history: the house obviously accomodated one of the city's nouveau riche families of the early twentieth century and the visitor can therefore achieve a very strong sense of the 'lived life'of the city's past through the domestic interior. The area is similarly attractive and close enough to the centre of the city to make a brisk walk possible. The facilities are excellent and the hosts very charming, informative and agreeable. There is a reasonable sized secure car park at the rear and the breakfast staff were uniformly friendly and helpful. As well as many other nearby attractions one of Edinburgh's six heritage pubs - 'Leslie's Bar' - is only a short five minute walk away. Modest but recommended.

Good Stuff: Attractive location, feeling of privacy, nice large room, charming and friendly greeting on arrival.

Douglas James‘s Rating: 4.4/5

Overall: As above.

Bad Stuff: You need to go outside and come back in to visit the breakfast room from the annex nezxt door. That would not be so good in severe weather.

Good Stuff: Clean, Well equipped and spacious with windows that could be opened if neccessary.

Overall: The Thrums hotel will give you a good experience and a taste of Edinburgh.

Bad Stuff: The water was yellow when it came out of the faucet. A bit scary, but it was explained.

Good Stuff: Our room at the Thrums hotel was clean and had personality, it was great to feel I was away on holiday in the room vs. feeling as if it was just another boring hotel room enroute to a business meeting.
