Overview

This is a lovely Georgian townhouse conversion in the very centre of the city. Modern facilities add to your stay along with the feeling of class a large Georgian property bring with it. One of the best loved places to stay in Edinburgh is waiting to greet you, cordially.

Although the area is now called the Old Town, our wonderful Georgian hotel was originally the focal point of the New Town when it was built in the late 1800s. Designed as the show piece of the area by architect Robert Adams the building has a wonderfully elegant facade, with this elegance and style being continued throughout the building.

With a perfect location at the West end of Princes Street, in the heart of a city that has a long and varied history everything that you could want. One of the main features of our location is easy access to the many splendid restaurants on George and Rose Street. Along here you will find all the varied menus you could want from seafood to texmex. Also you will find a number of lively city centre bars within easy reach. Whether your visit here is for business or pleasure, everything is within easy travelling distance.

We have kept up-to-date keeping this a splendid establishment, undergoing refurbishment and modernisation. We made sure to take great care to retain the original charm and character of this magnificent building so you could enjoy it. Twelve million pounds were spent improving the facilities we offer our guests. This was to make absolutely certain everything you could want during your stay is right here.

We now have 197 wonderfully comfortable and well equipped rooms that have everything that you would expect of a superior establishment such as ours. We have a stylish restaurant where you can dine on the finest cuisine. Freshly prepared by our talented chef and served in elegant surroundings. After a superb meal you can relax and unwind in our cosy lounge, where you can enjoy a drink from the bar in perfect comfort.

Stylish, top quality accommodation in a prime location is what you get here. We provide everything you need for a wonderful holiday or business trip.

Overall: The room service menu was excellent and the food was one of the best we have had from room service. We were suprised there were no fried or poached eggs on the room service breakfast menu. The staff were very friendly and accomodating. The only critisism was we never received a wake-up call we had placed.

Bad Stuff: buffet breakfast !!

Overall: The hotel was generally very comfortable, though our room was small, even compared to our children's, which was much more spacious. Most staff were very polite, apart from our first check-in person, who was rather officious and un-welcoming. We loved the pool and gym, but found the breakfast room service very over-priced and poor quality food. We loved the area and sense of comfort, but found it hard for example, to have enough drinking water in our room (the tap water smelled undrinkable). One evening we bought two bottles of water and it cost

Bad Stuff: The lift to the upper floors took an incredibly long time to arrive, and was so frustrating, that we usually walked up and down the four floors. Breakfast in the room service could definitely be vastly improved upon - it was certainly not up to any standard of good hotel at all, apart from the linen and china. The TVs should be put on a higher stand as you can't see when you lie in bed as it is so low!

Good Stuff: I liked the location, the comfort, the gym and pool.

Overall: I think you can see from the above comments that their is room for improvement in many areas. I paid 190 pounds per night and for that amount of money, I expect more. also someone tried to fedex me a script and was told that we had cancelled our reservation. We were there for 5 nights. Lani & Emanuel Azenberg

Bad Stuff: the toilet didn't flush, the hair drying (meant to be attached to the wall) was hidden in a desk drawer, the pillows smelled of cigarette smoke, the hallways were in need of paint/repair - as for the restaurant, the staff was ineffecient, sloppy looking, eating their own meals while neglecting to serve the guests. What about a tablecloth for dinner?

Good Stuff: very good location and charming old building -

Overall: My husband and I travel a lot. We have stayed in hotels all across the US and Europe. As an avid runner I found the gym to be very well-equipped (especially for Europe) and the nearby park safe, clean and nice to run in. The hotel is also very well located. The staff is friendly and helpful. It's a great find. We would definitely stay at the Roxburghe again and recommend it to our friends.

Good Stuff: The room was large, well-equipped, comfortable and quiet. It was actually better than what I had expected from what I had seen on the Internet.

Bad Stuff: Holes in walls, some parts of wallpaper ripped, the fact that I was slipped a bill under my door.

Overall: There was a need for urgent booking. I did find that different online agencies did portray an alternative picture to what I found. Our stay was compulsorily brief, but I found that the features that I had viewed with trepidation - i.e, availability of breakfast and on street parking, were adequately answered. I also felt that our late arrival, despite suggesting this before departure from South Wales, could have led to a modicum of awkwardness. In fact, I was extremely pleased with our welcome and disposal!

Bad Stuff: Accept need for reduced visual publicity, but despite address in hand, difficult to find nocturnally.

Good Stuff: Availabily, convenience and urgent necessity of finding rooms. Immediacy to point of family congregation.
